PEWS ON PARADE
It all started in 1999. First it was Cows on Parade in Chicago. Then it was Chairs on Parade in Charlotte. Now, Charlotte welcomes Pews on Parade! And it promises to be THE hottest, most talked-about public art exhibition!
Yes, we’re talking about church pews… twelve feet long, solid wooden pews that individual artists will transform into inspirational or functional pieces of art. Artists are encouraged to pull inspiration from historical and current cultural influences to create their own interpretation of the pew as an object of art. The artist may paint, sculpt, transform, or adorn the pew as he or she wishes, but it must remain structurally sound. In April 2007, the completed pews will be placed in public areas for 4 to 6 weeks… some indoors, some outdoors. They will be displayed at a gallery crawl in the NoDa neighborhood, as well as in Uptown Charlotte.
Companies and individuals will then vie for these historic works of art in an exciting live auction. Proceeds will be shared between the artists and the NoDa School of Arts. NoDa School of Arts is a non-profit organization that provides high quality performance and fine arts training to urban youth who otherwise would not be able to discover their artistic talents.
